I jailbroke my iPhone 3G, version 3.1.3, around 6 months ago and was wanting to upgrade my firmware to at least 4.0 because I can't install certain apps since they require at least 4.0.

I was wondering though, what happens when you update a jailbroken iPhone? I know my paid apps will remain, but how about the apps I installed through Installous?

I've also read that 4.1 is the latest firmware with a jailbreak. Redmondpie has a direct download link to the 4.1 firmware through Apple, and so I was also wondering, would it be possible to update to 4.1 directly without going to 4.2.1?

Basically I just want to update my iPhone to a firmware of at least 4.0 and still find a way to jailbreak it right away when that's done.

You need to save your shsh through Tiny Umbrella.
If I were you I would stick with 3.1.3. It runs very smooth unlike 4.2.1.
Trust me. I had a 3G and hated how laggy everything was.

Yes, you do. For the 3G shsh are needed to downgrade from 4.x.x to another 4.x.x

If you got from 4.x.x to 3.x.x then you don't need the shsh.

I thought it was all versions for the 3G phone. My mistake then as I have only done an upgrade to 4.2.1 and then back to 3.1.3 because it lagged my phone so bad.
