updating apps in categories

I had some apps in categories, one in a folder called games, and one in a folder called applications. I was searching through the appstore, and i noticed there were updates, two of them. I installed the updates while my apps were in categories. My question is should i have removed them from categories before i updated them? Now i have double of app icons. Wondering if i can delete them. I think they are different, one would be the non-updated version of the app, and one would be the updated version. but they are spelled the same. Any help would be appreciated.
