Updating EXIF time taken FROM Filename

Hi

Ok so i know there are a bunch of apps that will rename a photo using the Exif Data.

question is how can i batch change Exif data using the filename??

i have 1000's of scanned slides and Negatives, that all have DATE TAKEN as the Date they were scanned. I renamed all the photos as i went along and one of the components of my name is the date taken, the date the photo was originally taken.

is there a way, script, or automator that i can update the DATE TAKEN in the exif??

if you're not afraid to do some scripting, you can use exiftool
