Hi all,
My friend just got a new hard drive as the old one was dying and put Leopard on it (macbook), she tried to update to 10.5.1 straight away as 5.0 is so bad but when she downloaded it and it went to restart/instal the software it crashed on "configuring installation". After about two hours she finally gave in and restarted the computer and as she did she noticed it flick to the folder icon with the question mark (can't find and operating system i think???) for a few seconds before loading up into 10.5.0. She tried again and the same crash happened.

She asked me should she reinstall the operating system or would it be okay just to go back to a time machine backup. (only got one... just before the crash). Anyone heard of a similar problem or have any advice for her?

Do a full clean install and then download the 10.5.1 updater from Apple.com's download section.

Downloading it from Apple's website may allow you to resume a download if it were to be interrupted. You can always back up that file(s) incase your issue comes up gain. No longer will you need to spend the time downloading.

All it is,is a larger update if your re-install works
and no bugs why not wait for 10.5.2 and then
install from apple site

Because 10.5.0 was unusable in my opinion... but not such a bad idea in some ways, could be a week before that's out though

is that better then using the software update?
It's the full update, not the slimmed-down Software Update version. It also fixes most of those "SUID" warnings in Disk Utility that a lot of people report seeing (although they are safe to ignore, Apple has said so themselves).
