I had iphone 13 pro running ios 16 and apple watch 6 running watchos 9. the other day i updated my phone to ios 17.7. now the watch doesnt work with the phone anymore and it says "updated required" on the watch and then says "your phone must be updated to connect to apple watch" meaning i need to install ios 18 just to use my phone. i had ios 16 and watchos 9. why didnt updating to ios 17 make the watch go to watchos 10 and just work?

watchOS 10 isn't supported anymore, watchOS 11 is for Series 6 (I'm using it just fine). If you wanted to go to WatchOS 10, that should have been done before 11 was released.

The only way you could of updated to iOS17 and Watch OS10 would of been before iOS18 and Watch OS11 were released. If you want to use your watch again you'll have to update to iOS version 18.1 or 18.1.1 and Watch OS 11.1
