Updating on my new IMAC is taking forever

I have just bought 2017 5k iMac it has been updating for hours and for some time it does not seem to be doing anything it is stuck on * estimated time* it is on an external drive the drive is flashing. Should I turn it off? I turned it off and turned it back on again and it finished the up fate in no time. It seemed it was just about iCloud, don,t know why it took so long though.

That was a normal update, all it seemed to be about was changing my iCloud password

It is on an external drive no I am not updating to Big Sur, I am still on Mojave and happy with that.I did not think much of Catalina: let alone Big Su
