A friend has a 2015 MBP with Monterey. She can't update the OSX because it's too old. Does that mean more generally after 10 years any MBP (or Macbook Air I'm considering buying) cannot be updated? Thank you.

Monterey was the "current" version of macOS until 2022. That would be typical of Apple support of macOS/OSX. New versions of macOS for about 7 years from release of the Mac model, plus security patches for another 3 years.

The MBP can be updated to a more recent macOS using software called OCLP (Open-Core Legacy Patcher). This is unsupported by Apple and makes significant changes to the internals of macOS. My recommendation is not to follow that path unless your friend is capable of troubleshooting complex issues and then fixing them.

Agree with gilby above.
Don't be messing with OCLP.

It's time for your friend to think of something "new".
Or... possibly... "Apple refurbished"...

OS Monterey is not old, i have running on my Macbook air m1 2020 as can execute anything.
i have OS sequoia on the m1 mini and notice no difference in anything.
as the safety features are still strong and i can surf any website that wont embarrass my neighbors!
