'Updating' spinning circle on Mail, Phone, ipod, and Safari icons

I have a jailbroken 3G S. On the mail, phone, ipod, and safari icons there on the bottom left corner of each one is the little white gear looking thingy that pops up whenever something is loading or updating. Every now and then it will disappear from the icons, but usually just stays there. I have no idea why it's there. Any ideas?

Without seeing a screenshot, my guess is that it's something to do with the Backgrounder app (it puts badges on the icons of apps that are currently running in the background).
