Updating to OS8 on old phone for new 6

I'm thinking it maybe a good idea to update my 5s to OS 8 clean up any issues and do some housekeeping than make a nice backup for my iPhone 5s so when the 6 comes Friday I have the same OS 8 to work with from my 5s backup.

I'm thinking this maybe just a good way to go instead of working off of OS 7 to reload everything to the new phone.

What's everyone's plan

Couldn't hurt ... I will probably upgrade mine to iOS8 as well, although I don't think it would be necessary. I'm sure that Apple has carefully tested loading from iOS7 backups to an iOS8 phone.

I'm still on iphone4, so I'm not sure what to do. Just back up to iTunes? Still on ios5.
