Hey i have a mac pro desktop with two Dual Core processors
Mac Pro "Quad Core" 2.66 (Original) Specs (Mac Pro, MA356LL/A, MacPro1,1*, A1186, 2113) @ EveryMac.com

I would like to upgrade to an 8 core with similar specs to the one on this page:
Mac Pro - Shop Apple Desktop Computers - Apple Store (U.S.)

1) is this possible?
2) what would be the approximate cost?

Thanks!

Your model is actually a 2006 1,1. The fastest CPUs you can put in that machine are the Clovertown Xeon X5365s (3GHz quad). Matched pairs on get around $400 on eBay right now.

What types of software are using? There's no point in jumping to 8-core unless you have software that can scale to it (video encoding, 3D rendering, scientific computation, etc.).

Just keep in mind that Clovertowns aren't going to equal the Westmere CPUs found in 2010 Mac Pros, performance-wise. The architecture is newer and they overclock themselves when running single-threaded applications (the majority of software available). But they would provide a healthy speed bump over what you currently have in multithreaded tasks.
