I have an older 2009 C2D 2.66Ghz 15in Macbook Pro. Honestly I don't use it much because I do 99% of my work on a Mac Pro in my home office (graphic design/web using CS5) but now I'm getting more requests for temp work (On-site for a week or two at a time) but I need to lug my own equipment.

Is my machine worth spending $300 for an SSD + 8GB of ram upgrade? Or would it be worth it just to get what I can and put it towards a newer machine?

Any suggestions welcome.

Personally, I am in the wait til Applecare expires, then keep the machine as long as possible until it explodes then upgrade if you have the money camp. I do this because I am cheap though.

For most pros, "eating-off-of-my-work" pros, I'd say upgrade every two years. Sell your AppleCare'd machine off to a worthy college student or relative and grab the next best thing.

Also, in your case, the current MBP would be a decent upgrade. You may not need the quad cores, but it'll sure have some staying power if you ever decide to ride it until the wheels fall off.

True about being cheap I am generally the same way! I just saw a couple 09 models sell for under $800 and I started to worry if I hold out another year or so it won't be worth much at all now that quads took over.
