Upgrade 3G to 4.2.1 w/ BB preserved

Hi,

I got a JB 3G on 3.1.3 with 05.12.01 BB currently stuck on apple logo.
Wanted to upgrade/restore to 4.2.1 and preserve the BB.

So far i know PwnageTool is the way.

Problem no.1 - I don't have a mac (tho i might ask someone to make a custom ipsw for me... )
Perhaps somebody can provide me with a custom 3G 4.2.1 ipsw that has only activation and no multitasking, no home wallpaper while preserving BB?
Also is a previously JB iphone needed for this to work?

Problem no.2 - I keep seeing people complaining that PwnageTool and 4.2.1 don't really mix on 3G as Cydia keeps crashing.
RedSn0w is the only way?

It would be nice if somebody who actually has a working 4.2.1 3G with BB <5.13, and has used PwnageTool to achieve this, could answer

not sure why you wish to preserve your iphone 3G baseband unless for unlock reasons.

if you require unlocking then the ultrasn0w can do this for you regardless the baseband version as musclenerd has confirmed that the iphone 3G will always remain unlocked at iOS 4.1.2 (Baseband 05.15.04) as Apple are no longer supporting the iphone 3G.

as always - jailbreak using redsn0w and unlock using ultrasn0w

I mean, why are people then using 6.15 BB from iPad on 3G ??

It clearly says: "You will now be asked if you want to update your baseband to the 06.15 version. If you are on 05.14 or 05.15 or higher you will need to do this to unlock."

05.15.04 and 05.14.02 aren't unlockable with ultrasn0w even with 3G.

Obviously that 6.15 BB is from an ipad but it's a way to bypass the 5.14+ BB if you already got it - but it's not very stable.

So, has anyone used PwnageTool to JB the 4.2.1 version?
What about stability and what about issues i heard that cydia was crashing?
