Hi everyone,

I currently own a Mac Pro 2008 (4Gb, 2x2.8Ghz quad) with a 8800GT. Now I want to buy the 27" ACD when it comes out but I can't connect it to my 8800GT because it doesn't have a mini display port. The solution for this is to buy a Dr Bott converter (DVI signal converted to mini display port) (also see Dr Bott 9598-DGVL/ which will set me back $150 (for 24" there's this one: 9590-DVLK). Now I can also buy the ATI Radeon HD 4870 (which has mini display port) for about $300 (I'm from Europe so both prices are in Euros actually). This way I will also have the speaker and isight functionality which I may not have when using a converter.

Now for my question!! Do you think it is worth upgrading my 8800GT to the HD 4870 (for 185 euros)? I'm using my Mac for photography (CS5 / Lightroom / Capture NX etc).

And do I have to remove my 8800GT once I buy the ATI? Or can the system still use both, even if I only want to connect just one monitor to the 4870?

Thx for your thoughts!

Go for the 5770 instead. You can run it with your 8800, if you want to. Depending on your applications, keeping the 8800 probably won't give you any performance boost though.

4870 will have to run by itself.

Thx for your response. Are you sure the 5770 will run on my Mac Pro 2008? It sure looks very good, and cheaper.
I looked it up on the applestore but it didn't mention support for my 2008 version.

Yes, Apple doesn't mention it but it does work in a 2008 Mac Pro.

thx! I'll go ahead and buy that one. Don't need the very best card anyway and now I have mini display port... finally :p.
