I have been a windows user since last few years and have recently got in to video editing. I am using iMovie as of now and will soon have to upgrade to Final Cut Pro. My windows laptop recently stopped working and it seems it cannot be repaired. The immediate thought was to buy a new windows laptop then I also have a Macbook Air 13 inch Mid 2012 and a Macbook Pro 13 inch Mid 2009.

  • Macbook Pro Mid 2009 13-inch
  • 2.26 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
  • 8 GB Memory
  • Nvidia Geforce 9400M 256 MB
  • Just formatted and working smoothly.

  • Macbook Air Mid 2012 13-inch
  • 1.8 Ghz Dual Core Intel Core i5
  • 4 GB Memory
  • Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB
  • Never formatted. Is in a working condition but is very slow.

Option 1: Upgrade to SSD on the Macbook Pro
Option 2: Upgrade SSD on the Macbook Air

Any other upgrades possible?

To use Final Cut Pro, which laptop will be better off upgrading? The other activities include using MS Office & Google Chrome.

I would probably pick the MacBook Pro 13, upgrade the hard drive to a SSD. But I hope you have an older version of FCPX. The mid-2009 will only support to El Capitan which supports up to FCP 10.3.4. It will also be pretty slow, I hope your videos are not too long.

I'm using Davinci Resolve 16 on a mid-2012 MacBook Pro 13, 2.5ghz dual core i5, 16gb ram and SSD. My videos only run 3 minutes or less.

My videos are about 20 mins long. I think the MBP is out of question.
Also got a Mac Mini late 2012. Its performing the best and I have hardly used it. It has a SATA drive though and 4 GB ram. Wondering if a 16gb ram upgrade will make sense on it.

Final Cut needs a solid graphic card.
and ample RAM
therefore the 2009 MBpro would be a better option to upgrade

the MacBook air probably wont edit full length video with sound editing as fast or smooth as the MBpro.
I used final cut on a maxed out Macbook pro from 2012 while freelancing in 2016 and there was some lag, but that laptop performed great, these were 45 minutes videos of cam recorded low dpi boring business conferences speeches with some graphic "layers" like text and info drop quotes along with pic in pic features. (im failing a sleep now remembering the editing process). I know i could not create the videos on my MacBook air!

what ever you decide, just hang on to these laptops, they will run as long as they are taken care of.

i hoped this helped!
