The subject line basically says it all.

My wife hasn't updated her M1 Air in quite a while and is still on Big Sur. I want to get her onto Ventura. Should I update her to Monterey first or just go straight from Big Sur to Ventura?

I think if there is any reason for going via Monterey that Software Update would take you to Monterey. If SU offers Ventura I would just do it.

Yes if you just go to Software Update; BUT, sometimes, people need files in macOS that they skipped over & have to go back to reinstall them;

do a backup first, then just try updating to Ventura.

sometimes, when people install each version, they run into new bugs (say, a bug in Monterey that was fixed in Ventura), so do it if Software Update lets you :)
