I have an early 2008 2.4 Blackbook with 4gb of ram. I updated from windows with the intention that this computer would last for me quite a few years.

But what is causing me to consider the upgrade is that, with the Macbook, I have started to do quite a bit of design stuff—specifically Photoshop and After Effects. I also have started using a projection program for a church called Propresenter, and I definitely notice some delays, especially using the projection software.

I am wondering if the 2.53 13in MBP with 4GB would offer a significant performance upgrade.

Thanks for the help!

That's a tough one. I am thinking that if it seems you need some real GPU umpf you may not even find a solution in a 13" MBP, you may have to jump all the way to the middle 15" MBP, but if I were you I would definitely try to make sure it's really a problem with your laptop before you go through the headache of replacing your black macbook, normally it's a very capable machine.
