Upgrade from 10.5.8 to 10.6 Snow Leopard

Currently I have Leopard on my 2009 iMac and I wanted to upgrade to 10.6. So I had borrowed my friend's 10.6.4 Mac OSX Install DVD. I tried clicking on the INSTALL MAC OS X button and a screen pops up which says, "To set up the installation of Snow Leopard, Click Continue." By the time I click continue an error pops up which says, "Mac OS X Snow Leopard can not be installed on this computer." And I have already tried everything up to booting up from dvd. Please Help!!!!!

Are you using a retail disc?

The only thing I know is that my friend bought the iMac from Best Buy and the disk came with it. I was looking at the disk and it says not to be sold separately

Those discs are only able to be used with the macs that they came with and won't work on any other Mac. You'll need to find a retail disc to install snow leopard.

And, um, that violates your friend's license agreement anyway. The reason they don't give it away is that they're in business, not charity work.
