upgrade from 10.5.8 to Lion

Hi
sorry for my ignorant but the answer is critical to my decision because i m running VMWARE and dynamip applications on my 10.5.8

If I upgraded my system from 10.5 to Lion, do i have to rebuild all my application from scratch ? cant i just backup my application and than copy it back to the application folder in new running OS lion and things work fine ?
