Upgrade from 10.5.8 to OS Lion how?

Friend has a 10.5.8 MBP and wants to go to lion; is this possible? If so how? If he needs snow leopard where can he obtain a copy of SL?

As far as I know, the only way to upgrade to Lion from an OS other than SL (10.6) is to buy a Lion USB Thumb Drive from Apple for $70. However, I am not sure if you'll be able to properly transfer your files and settings this way or if you'll need to do a clean install.

Here search next time! We have 2-3 threads about it and I have answered them all. U can only restore all that from time machine after a clean install.
