Greetings,

I am preparing to do a clean install of 10.7 this weekend on my MBP mid2010.
I have tried to search the internets and this forum and was not able to find a sure answer or I may just be searching for the wrong criteria.

My MBP came with a 10.6.3 DVD. While creating my upgrade plan I notice that 10.7 requires 10.6.8 (which my MBP is currently running).

For a fresh install do I start with 10.6.3 and install the combo update to 10.6.4 then the combo update for 10.6.5 and so on until my machine is running 10.6.8 then install Lion.

I was hoping to start with 10.6.3 and jump to the 10.6.8 update combo, then install 10.7. Is this possible or do I have to install all the combo updates leading to 10.6.8?

Thanks

You can just install the combo update to 10.6.8. In fact, that is what Software update will do.
You will need 10.6.8 to download Lion.

Buy Lion on the Appstore before doing anything to that MacBookPro!

Once it is downloaded, follow this to make a bootable DVD or flash drive to install Lion from.

Boot to that drive and do a clean install.

No need to go back to 10.6.3 and update.

Thanks!!!!!

Thanks for the replies!!!!!

So there is no need to install 10.6.3 from DVD.

Am I understanding correctly that:

- While on 10.6.8 I download Lion.
- Then create a boot copy of 10.7
- Then do a clean install of 10.7

I know I am skipping a few things there but that is the general idea, as long as I am running 10.6.8, I am able to download 10.7 but do not run the update, just create a bootable 10.7 and wipe my hard drive and do a clean install of 10.7.

Right ?

Thanks again

That is correct. Use a DVD, 8 + GB flash drive, or extra blank HDD to create a bootable Lion installation drive while on 10.6.8. Then when you boot from that, you will be able to select clean install.

Edit: I don't recall, but you may have to load Disk Utility and erase the drive (when booted from the install drive) before you can do a clean install. Otherwise the installed might automatically just do an upgrade.
Also, here is a more detailed process.
