Just upgraded from a 2014 MacBook Pro 13 with i5 and 8GB RAM. Don’t get me wrong the new m4 air is nice but I was a little underwhelmed.

1. Screen on the old MBPro seems sharper at least the text does. Maybe cos it’s running OSX Big Sur.
2. Keyboard and touchpad on the old MBPro are nicer to type on.
3. Apps load and run faster on the new m4 but the difference is marginal. At least for basic email, browsing, MSoffice.
4. Battery life is much better on new m4 air but I’m impressed I can still get several hours on my old MacBook.
4. Nicest part of the m4 Air is the midnight color and the extra storage space

Nice.. I was gonna go with a 15" when they came out but just couldn't pull the trigger.. My 15" 2015MBP 2.5 i7 16gb with a 2TB NVMe drive I upgraded to is just too good. I would have to spend about 2500$ to get something comparable new and I would probably get the 14" Pro. I've read the new screens could have flicker issues for people with sensivity to that. With my luck that might affect me. There are a couple other threads in here discussing that issue.. How is the M4 Air 15" display for you? Any flickering noticeable?

Apple changed the way they are scaling text on newer laptops prioritizing more screen estate. You can also simply adjust the scaling back to 'bigger text' instead of doing what I mentioned in that post but I wouldn't recommend it as you do indeed lose quite a lot of space. While MacOS UI updates and most apps are prioritizing the current default scaling for more area to work with.

PS. Screen itself is not any less sharp. It's only the software that is scaling the text and UI differently now for your default settings. I do agree that this is not ideal however and they could fine-tune those user defaults much better.

I have the M4 Air 13” and no noticable flickering. Battery life has improved greatly after the first week. It’s truly a multi day usage device.
