Hi my first post so hopefully all in line with forum rules.
I have a 3G 16GB running OS 3.0.1, Baseband 04.26.08. When I got this handset I used redsn0w and ultrassn0w to jb and unlock it. The handset itself was not activated by the network originally as im using it on another network. Its been a while since I did this so am confused and would like some help please.

To upgrade it to 3.1.2 I need a CFW of 3.1.2 correct? Do I need an activated or will an unactivated version of the ipsw be fine?
To use this file do I put the iPhone in recovery mode then hold down shift and select the CFW and use it in iTunes?

I remember a when doing this the first time around I had option of some kind to set up iPhone as new or restore etc.. which option should I select (not sure what stage this options comes at) to keep my contacts etc.. I understand my jb apps need to be re installed but it should sync my other apps?

I wish to use ultrasn0w as it seems reliable and I've never had problems with it currently for the network unlock and redsn0w for the jb.

Any advice is appreciated.
p.s I have a 3GS also that is on 3.0 and same baseband as mentioned, what would the steps for this be?

Thank You all
