Hi guys,
Ive just bought my MBP (15" 2.4) Ive been using a G5 dual 2.5 for the last 3 years just for music and now im making the jump to both have mobile music and all the files from my PC onto the Mac and go 100% Apple (though its gonna take a fair few bus powered external hard drives!)
My first question is i wanted to upgrade the MBP with a faster hard drive and max out the ram - so far as ive been playing ive probably spent 8 hours putting the programs i want on etc - so i was wondering is there a way to clone this drive to the new one (via an external 2.5 caddy) so i wouldn't have to start from scratch again with OSX or is this a bad idea, perhaps a backup of all the files and installation would be easier? I plan to install bootcamp as well just to use a couple of things i bought for vista which are obsecure but im hoping within a few months ill be able to delete the vista partition and get back more data.
Secondly i must say i think the MBP is the shoddiest Mac ive owned or used - my first G5 didnt work at all (which was my first experience with Mac's) but once replaced its been on 24/7 in the studio for 3 years since and works just like the day i bought, very happy! Ive also got a Macbook in the household which is very well made, but the MBP, well the keyboard feels a bit flimsy, it doesnt seem to have the nice expensive look of most Apples - but more importantly my monitor is warped and the bottom right hand corner is slightly darker than the rest of the screen. Its minor, but it tempted me to take it back, except its so minor i cant be bothered with the hastle, especially when a survey on here showed a lot of people have the same symptoms and i might end up with one that is worse!
Anyway more importantly - what is the biggest and fastest external hard drive you can get that is bus powered? With a usb splitter (eg 2x usb) on an external usb drive do you think it would power one of the 7200rpm 200gb hard drives? Or should i stick to a slower 200gb option just for the data size? It would be nice to have the speed for audio see, it might struggle to stream tracks from a 5000 or 4000rpm drive.
