Upgrade in Jan. Early iPhone upgrade?

I'm up for an upgrade in January, I already sold my iPhone 4. [I'm using a palm pixi plus for now(bummer)]
So I've been reading all these rumors, and I've been preparing myself for the next iPhone. All the rumors point to before next year and I myself expect it to be here before then also.
So AT&T has this paragraph that says eligible for an early iPhone upgrade?? Has anyone had experience with this?
So since my upgrade is in Jan, can I upgrade to the new iPhone a couple months (or whenever it releases) before the upgrade date?

I used this upgrade trick to get my iPhone 4. From what I've heard, the upgrade has to be within this calendar year to be pushed forward AND you must be an existing iPhone user.
