I'm having hard drive problems on my MBP (3,1).

To make a long story short - I'm going to replace the hard drive this weekend with a new WD 320GB. But this looks like an opportune time to upgrade to 10.6.

Can I install the 10.6 upgrade on a bare drive?
If so, can I restore my 10.5 Time Machine backup onto it?

Or should I just go ahead and install 10.5, restore, and then install 10.6?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

The "Upgrade" disk will search for Leopard to be installed, so you will need to install Leopard first.

I would recommend installing Leopard, Restoring with Time Machine, then installing Snow Leopard.

You can use your 10.5 Time Machine backup on 10.6, you can restore it after the first initial boot after the install.
