Forgive me if this is a repeat question, I did not see something popup in a search.

My mother has an upgrade available on a family plan she shares with my dd, wife and brother. I have a AT&T phone through my employer. She has a flip phone and has no intentions on upgrading.

Can I order and iPhone 5 using her upgrade and then activate it on a different plan? I know I will have to go get a fresh SIM to make it work, but I have never done the activate on another plan before, only upgraded on one line and activate on another but on the same plan.

Thanks for any help.

I'm doing the same exact thing with my dads upgrade. The consensus seems that you have to go into AT&T and get a new sim card that's assigned to your own number, pop that one in and then activate. You can't just get it and activate it on your own unfortunately.
