Hi, just about to order my first iMac to be used mainly for HD video editing and photoshop work plus normal day to day stuff.

Going for ram upgrade and bigger hard drive but can also stretch to either upgrade to i7 or graphics card upgrade to 2gb, which do you guys think would be the better upgrade out of processor or graphics card for video and photo work.

Thanks in advance.

First of all: don't order ram from Apple, buy 3d party ram for much cheaper.

I also wouldn't order the bigger hard drive, since 1TB is plenty. If I were you, I'd order a good external HD with Firewire 800 and use that for video editing and media files.

For video and photo work you better upgrade the processor.

  • i7 definitely.
  • Bigger hard drive. if you believe you'll need the space go for it.
  • RAM? third party. If you remove the Apple supplied RAM, save it. Sometimes Apple wants it in the system when there are warranty issues. Or if Apple needs to replace the system.
  • Only 1GB of VRAM is not likely to be an issue for you. It definitely isn't right now.
