I have an old MacbookPro12,1 (Early 2015) and was wondering if getting the base model M1 Air would be worth it.

Recently it's been getting way to hot and loud to use, and sometimes comes to a crawl. I have cleaned and redone the thermal paste a couple of times. Would "upgrading" to an Air be worth it? Plus having a newer Mac that can do Sidecar and Universal Control with my iPad Pro would be pretty cool.

If so, should I wait till the Summer/Fall to see what Apple plans to do with the new Air or just get one now?

Thanks!

If you can, I would wait there are several rumours about a new air floating round from as early of a release as mid 2022 to as late as November 2022, although it’s most likely coming in late 2022… but recently it’s rumoured to still have the M1 chipset, so maybe it’s nearly ready for mass production…

Something is telling me we may get another event before WWDC considering how early apples most recent event was, usually their spring events are late March early April.

However please bare in mind the new Air will likely get a price bump to $1200-$1300 most likely so if that’s out of your price range I would just bite the bullet now…

FWIW, after using an M1 iMac for the past few months I can tell you it’s super fast and will suit over 90% of users, never heard the fans as of yet, so I doubt you will need a fan design unless your use case involves heavy workloads.

The M1 Air is as fast as or faster than about any 8 core(or fewer) Intel Mac, and it crushes any 13" MacBook Pro. It's fanless and runs cool.

There's really no glaring weakness of the M1 Air. Its design is just pretty old, and will probably get a nice refresh. I doubt an Air redesign is going to be that much faster, like how the iPhones get a little bit faster every year but it's hard to tell. It might get magsafe , SD-card or other niceties the current model lost. I can't imagine the port situation getting worse, thankfully Apple seems to have moved past that era.

It remains to be seen how often Apple plans to release new generations of CPUs... but just going off how often they us the M1 brand with emphasis on the '1' part seems like it'll still be a while before the M2 comes out.

I have heard that the upcoming Air will get the M2 processor and MagSafe. I have also read that the new Air may come in a slightly bigger 13.6 inch display size and will have a white keyboard. Not sure I will like the white keyboard... Once it comes out I may have to take a trip to the Apple store to check out the new Air to see if it will be worth it to upgrade... to be perfectly honest, I'm still happy using my older MacBook Pros as they all do everything I need and I'm not needing cutting edge performance to do the tasks I currently use my laptops for... there will be a point where I will need to consider upgrading. Just not sure I'm at that point yet...
