Upgrade program, initial signup question

Im sure this had been answered before but can't find it, sorry if this should be obvious.

When initially signing up for the program do I have to trade in my current phone? I know that I would have to trade in when renewing at 12 months, but wondering if I have to trade in when first signing up. I think I'll have to but was hopping to give my current phone to my son.
