Upgrade questions problems

Hello,
I would like to upgrade to the newest os X, but was told I need to upgrade my macbook before hand.
Currently my system specs
2.16 ghz core 2 duo
Memory 1gb
HD 160 gb
mid 07 model
version 10.5.8
so if I want to run the most recent software what should I do ?
Also could you provide links if suggested parts to buy.

Another option I can consider is selling my current macbook and buying a mid 2009 the 2.4 ghz model. Would this be a better idea than upgrading my current model? I had a apple run test on all of my componets and they reported no issues.

Upgrade the RAM to either 2 or 4 GB and maybe the HDD (up to 750GB, maximum height: 9.5mm) if necessary.

No need for a new Mac with many most recent software, but sa there is quite a lot of most recent software out there, it may be of help, if you post what most recent software you have in mind.

You can do it before or afterwards, it will run with 1GB, but the more RAM the merrier.

You can't buy Apple Care anymore, you can only buy Apple Care within the first 365 days of your original purchase.
