Yep I was in my Apple Store this evening and the guy confirmed that they will let you just pay and leave and activate at home. But that they would activate it in store for those who want/need the assistance.
 
WOW I think this is big news for us Upgrade Swappers and makes me just THAT much more happier. :D I was worried that I'd get an i4 from Apple and have to go through some unnecessary hassle (after Apple activated there) to get the i4 on my line.
 
The people that ordered 3GS's last year were able to activate at home as well... it's not new for this year, that I know of.
