Upgrade to 3.1.2?

Hey guys. I'm running a jailbroken 3GS with 3.0.1 and am thinking about upgrading to 3.1.2. The phone will randomly lose signal and then get it back ten seconds later, it's lagging, contacts getting deleted, apps not installing. It's time to start fresh. Sorry if this has already been asked, but any advice on upgrading and not losing everything?
