Parents have a 4K ATV and it performs much better than the HD and they say it has not crashed. I wonder if I should upgrade. I would wait for the new ATV but I doubt they will release it so I may upgrade. Would you upgrade? I sometimes experience issues with my HD where I have to reboot and I think it’s the a8 chip which is ancient.

You could also get 4k playback of your iTunes library by using the app on a smart TV, Firestick 4k, or Roku Stick 4k. Much cheaper than a new ATV 4k. You may find that you don't even need a new ATV :)

I have a HD TV. What concerns me is the having to reboot my ATV about once every two weeks.

I would get a Firestick 4k or a Roku Streaming Stick +. They both work quick well.

I have an ATV 4k and lots of movies in my iTunes library. I bought a Firestick 4k to replace my brother's ATV 3rd Gen to use with his 1080 TV and the Roku Streaming Stick + for my other brother to use with his 1080 TV. I share my library with them and they are thrilled with it's performance.

I also share my Google Movies library with both brothers too. Unfortunately, the Firestick 4k's YouTube app only support stereo sound while the Roku has the Google Movies app for 5.1 sound.

I actually warn you of this a while back. Do you remember these posts from two years ago:
Just bought the 4 yesterday with 32GB. Is that allot?
Unless you got a really good deal for the ATV4, I would get the ATV4k instead. You do not need a 4K TV to benefit from the ATV4K hardware.

My 32GB ATV4K runs circles around my 64GB ATV4.
So, if you paid full retail for the ATV4, the ATV4K is not much more money, I would go for the better hardware.
I have had it for almost a week and its already crashed twice. Anyway to get rid of these crashes?
I warned you in another thread that the ATV4 has lag, slowdowns, and app crashing issues. I suggested getting an ATV4k instead.
I think you would have had a better experience if you would have gone with the ATV4k.

Another thing to keep in mind is that tvOS 13 is such a turd, maybe this might be your issue. I hope Apple fixes it with tvOS14.

This is a hard to say. If the experience using the ATV4 was really bad, then I would upgrade.

No one knows for sure when/if a new Apple TV will be out. I would try to wait it out if you can, but even if you do decide to get an ATV4k and Apple releases a new one a short time later, it isn't like the ATV4k will be worthless. The A10X is really powerful, and overpowered for just a streaming box.

Also, if Apple releases a new ATV, no one knows what the updates will be. There has been conflicting rumors about whether or not it will have an A12 or A12X in it. If it is an A12 and that is the primary upgrade to it, according to benchmarks the A10X is almost as good as the A12, and according to some developers, it is actually faster than the A12.

If the new one is a A12X or better, than that would be a significant upgrade.

I would get a Firestick 4k or a Roku Streaming Stick +. They both work quick well.
I have mixed feelings about this.

My current everyday devices are an ATV4k, ATV4, Fire TV4k, Firestick, and sometimes a Roku TV 4k.

The ATV4K is by far the best device, imo. The UI is great, smooth, and simple. The ATV4K is really overpowered for a streaming box, and is capable of much more. It is on my main TV.

The UI on the Fire devices is messy, ad-ridden, sluggish, and not as intuitive as tvOS. The Roku's UI is more simple than the Fire devices, but not in a good way, and seems really outdated like an UI from 15 years ago. I would really hate the experience of using a Fire device or Roku on my main TV.

That said, once in the apps, there is little difference between tvOS and the competitor's experience. While there are a few apps on the Roku that I prefer over the tvOS version, but overall, the experience is the same, or the ATV4k's version is better.

The biggest downside to the ATV4K is the price, which is why I use some non-Apple streaming boxes. If money wasn't an issue, I would definitely have an ATV4K on each of my TVs instead of the Fire devices.

With being able to buy multiple Fire devices for the price of one ATV4K, I definitely see the appeal, especially for a secondary TV.

My suggestion for someone with one TV or for their main TV is to try the ATV4k if they can afford it. For secondary TV, get a cheaper device and save money.

perhaps my problems are TV OS 13 then.

Yes, the ATV 4K is nice and smooth, no question.

I'm in Canada and the ATV refurbished is $189.99 + 13% sales tax. The Firestick 4k and Roku Streaming Stick+ can be had for $35 to $39 plus 13% sales tax.

My family uses these streaming sticks for Netflix and Apple TV, that's it because we don't subscribe to any other streaming services. We all have cable TV as well.

All I can say we have an Apple TV HD (actually from before it was called "HD") that gets daily use and it performs just fine and I don't remember it ever crashing. It only gets rebooted when there's a firmware update. Why do you have to reboot yours all the time?

Once every two weeks while watching Star Trek or X-files and it buffers and buffers so I have to reboot. Don’t know why.

Hm, that sounds like a network issue.

One thing you could try before buying a new one is to do a factory reset on your Apple TV and set it up from scratch. That will, among other things, reset the network settings.
