Upgrade to Lion

Hi,

the time has come to upgrade to Lion! I am still running Snow Leopard on my Macbook Pro 2011 and now I want to get Lion, but i have a problem.

I want to do a fresh installation of Lion. My procedure to do so would be:

1. Download the Lion OS from the AppStore.
2. Create a bootable usb drive with Lion on it.
3. Plug my drive in, restart my Mac (holding down the option key)
4. Install Lion.

Is that correct or did i miss anything? And, is it possible to format the harddrive before installing Lion?

I believe that if you start from the USB you made using InstallESD.dmg, the same options are present that would be if you had booted from an OS DVD. That is, you should be able to run disk utility from the USB and format Macintosh HD if you like.

I'm curious, why the fresh install? All my Macs were SL to Lion upgrades and I've had very few problems.
