I am running Leopard and am considering upgrading to Snow Leopard....
I bought my Mac from a friend and it has Garageband, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, etc. installed but I do not have any discs with them.
If I upgrade will these programs be lost? Is there any way i can put them on a disc myself...or can i back it up to an external hard drive and get them back on after the upgrade.
I am a new Mac user and have no idea what I am doing. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

The iLife apps are included in Snow Leopard.

It's $25-30 depending where you buy, so not a major financial loss if you don't like it. I'd suggest upgrading for security improvements, but depending on how Apple handles it, you may need Snow Leopard if you plan to upgrade to Lion.

That's what I thought, thanks. Will I need to back up my applications before upgrading then?
No, only your data. The upgrade will upgrade the apps as well as the OS (assuming you have the box set).
