Read/Write went from 600/900 to 2600/2800. The 4 TB drive is the Crucial P3 which goes up to 3,500 Mbps. I am very happy with the results though the old results were also quite usable. The OWC enclosure is a big chunk of aluminum for a heat sink compared to the tiny Orico enclosure. This speeds up my Windows virtual machine and NAS access.

There are a bunch of relatively recent USB4 enclosures and they definite cost more than the USB3 enclosures but they can get quite good speeds to save money on Apple storage. We should get Thunderbolt 5 when the M4 Studio comes out and it will be fun looking at external storage speeds then. I do not think that I will need Thunderbolt 5 speeds but they will be fun to watch.

The plethora of TB4/USB4 external enclosures has me thinking of getting base storage on the Studio in the future and not worrying about having enough on the internal drive. The M4 Studios will have Thunderbolt 5 drives and you can build external SSDs faster than the internal drive; but it will nice to not have to pay the Apple Tax on storage anymore.

We can buy 3rd party internal storage now for both the M1 and M2 Mac Studio.

Hopefully the same applies for future models 😅

What's changed is that there are far more options at USB4 and Thunderbolt 4. And we're just getting started on Thunderbolt 5.
