So I went from a Mini to a Retina Mini. Old sound was decent, nothing amazing, but the sound quality on the retina mini is awful. Almost hurts my ears on some games. Why did Apple do this? I confirmed the issue with several display units in the Apple store. :-(

I agree. The Mini's speakers went from surprisingly decent in the first gen, to surprisingly bad in the retina.

Clearly they've done some rearranging inside the guts, maybe to accommodate the larger battery. The result is a sonic downgrade.

I was able to watch a movie with the original's speakers. The new ones are way too piercing and shrill for that.

Yeah. It's so strange. It's actually painful.
