upgraded safari, now it won't work

I've got a G4, running OSX 10.4.11, and tried upgrading safari - from among the other upgrades offered. Now - with vsn 3.1.2 - Safari just quits unexpectedly. So does Preview and Disk Utility. Meanwhile upgraded itunes and Quicktime both work online fine.
Any ideas what to do? Makes me think 'why-oh-why did I upgrade?!!!'
I do also have an iBook G4 working fine with Safari 3.1.2.
