After using MacOS Catalina, I finally decided to upgrade to Big Sur 11.5 on my primary laptop - 2020 MBPro 13" / 16 GB / 1TB. The Thunderbolt docking station from Caldigit https://www.caldigit.com/thunderbolt-4-element-hub/ requires Big Sur.

In so many ways, the decision to upgrade was made for me.

After testing Big Sur on an external SSD drive, I found no major issues with applications I use on a daily basis. Only Microsoft Auto Update had to be downloaded and reinstalled.

At this point, I have to say good bye to bootable backups which were seamless with Catalina and SuperDuper!. I did try to create a bootable external backup using SuperDuper! beta version. While booting, an error message appeared, "Unrecoverable error. SecurityAgent was unable to create requested mechanism builtin:prelogin".

I proceeded to create a new standard backup using Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) and installed Big Sur on the drive after the backup completed. It's not a perfect answer to creating bootable backups but at least it's an option.

What's ahead:
- Buy Caldigit Element Hub; expected to be available in August 2021
- Buy 2 x Dell U2720Q USB C 4K monitors
