I will be traveling soon and want to get the most of my 2012 MacBook Pro. I want to add a wireless keyboard and mouse, and a travel monitor. A local privately owned store that sells used macs is guiding me. They say they can provide me with a used first generation wireless Apple keyboard and mouse for around $40. Sounds reasonable. The store said that I should get the traveling monitor on my own. I checked out Amazon that has a lot of inexpensive travel monitors for around $100. They all seem to connect with USB-C and mini HDMI. I am able to by a Thunderbolt (Mini Display port) to mini HDMI cable. Will this allow the monitor to work? My MacBook Pro has USB-2 ports. Would the monitor work using USB-2? The travel monitor has build in speakers. Would they be driven by the Mini Display Port to mini HDMI hook up?

Can I get some guidance, please? Thank you.
