Are all SATA II and III 3.5" HDDs compatible for an early 2008 8,1 24" iMac? The architecture is SATA 2 (300/3Gb).

I was thinking of putting in a 3 or 4 TB 3.5" HDD, and nearly all new ones are SATA3 which should be backwards compatible. Maybe something like a WD 4TB Green SATA 6Gb/s 64MB 3.5" Hard Drive which is the cheapest 4TB drive I could find.

I removed the Hitachi HDS721010KLA330 1TB 3.5" (SATA2?) HDD from the iMac in order to install a 500GB SSD Drive. I now however want to install a 2nd hard drive somehow (for time machine back ups), either replacing the optical drive or moving the SSD somewhere else.

Thanks for the input!
