Hi
Just wondering - I have Lion Developer Preview 4 installed on my Mac - does anybody know if I will be able to upgrade that to the final release of Lion when it does come out? There seem to be mixed messages out there on the forums at the moment.

Sam

I heard that you will have to clean install SL then upgrade to Lion.

Can't confirmed but i read it on this site

The logs on the the dev site from Apple says you will not be able to go from DP4 to the final build

What do you guys think then? Do you think there will be another developer release like a GM which will then lead to a release which can be upgraded to the final release version? I think there must be - it's too much like Microsoft to prevent upgrades from beta software to final releases.

Where did you read this? It is known you cannot upgrade from any DP version.
Apple has stated this with every DP upgrade.

BTW read developer program agreements ..

Wirelessly posted (iPhone 4: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8J2 Safari/6533.18.5)

Yes, you can install GM on top if DP4.

Well I know with the GM build that looks like it is just a hidden version of the real version due out very soon I am able to install it over the DP4 - so I think yes you can :)

You cannot upgrade from a Developer releaser to final. This question has been asked to death, please use search.

Actually, this is misunderstanding

Apple won't offer Software Update to update DP 4 to GM or final version.

But you can install GM or final version over Mac running DP 4.

Install Over DOES NOT EQUAL Upgrade

This is very bad and should be avoided at all costs since it just overwrites some system files and leaves others to sit and cause problems.

A clean install headache now saves exponentially more later.

Can you update the Gold Master to final without
having to revert back to Snow Leopard and is this
a good idea?

The GM is the final, unless they find any showstopping bugs
Two questions....

Just for the sake of it, can you install the final version over GM

-or-

Will the GM pull in the necessary software updates to bring it up to speed with everyone else?

I know it's a silly question given the GM is final, but here is why I ask...

I have a developer in the family who has installed a copy on my machine. Yet, I want to support Apple and pay for the final copy when it is available. So in essence, I would be installing the final Apple Store download release over the Gold Master.

The GM and the final version are the same thing. You can do that all you like, you'd just be reinstalling the same thing again.

Nope, can't be done. Just tried to purchase Lion from the App Store and I get a message stating that the version I have installed (dev GM) is newer than the version I'm purchasing and in order to install, I have to place the existing app in the trash.

Is that proof enough?

I'm also running the dev GM and had no problems purchasing/downloading Lion from the App Store. I didn't obtain my dev GM through the normal sources, so not sure if that's what the difference is.

It seems that you are offered to buy it anyway if you have the GM version of 'Install Mac OS X Lion' in your downloads folder.
