Since I started to have more and more bulky files, seems that the disk access time has been increased significantly and Leopard often hangs when it is accessing the hard drive. I'm currently using a 17" 2.33GHz Core2Duo MBP with 2GB RAM and 160GB 5400rpm HDD. The one I'm looking at is Hitachi Travelstar 7K200.

I just have a few questions here,

1. Generally speaking is it worth the upgrade if I'm going to use the current laptop for 2.5 years longer?

2. How much speed increase will the new hard drive bring?

3. Anywhere to get a cheap yet genuine 7k200 in UK?

Thanks a lot! :D:D:D

I can't help you with where to purchase the Hitachi Travelstar 7K200 in the UK, but I will tell you that early last year I upgraded my 4 year-old 15" Powerbook 1.25GHz to the 100GB drive (upgrade from the 80GB 5400rpm) and put in an 8x DVD-DL burner while I had the 'hood' open... and I'm very happy with the upgrade on both fronts.

Your MacBook Pro is MUCH faster than my old Powerbook, but my drive is whisper quiet, and is very responsive when copying to and from.... so yes, I have noticed a performance boost. When you find the drive in the UK for purchase, and since you intend to keep your MBP for another 2+ years... This is a smart upgrade (IMO). Good luck.

$139.99 - Newegg.com after rebate...

although the WD Scorpio 5400 320GB is nearly as fast...

I upgraded my Macbook Pro, from a stock 120GB 5400RPM drive to a Hitachi 7k200 7200rpm / 200gb. The speed increase is very noticeable.. and having 200gb at my disposal on the go feels great.

You can pick up a case for your old drive from OWC.. the usb model is on sale for 29$
