Upgrading External Drive Limit Question

Hello! because of the nature of my work I have many many old external 1tb FW800/USB3 drives.
I want to swap the 1tb disks with higher capacity drives but I believe there is a controller card limit on how large a capacity it can support.

How do I find this out? I have LaCie and WD drives mostly.

Some -might- support 2tb.
Maybe even 4tb.
Probably not more than that.
Perhaps the only way to find out which ones will, is to try replacing them, a little-at-a-time.
