Hi, this is my first post here.

I'm going to upgrade from 4.1, which I jailbroke using limera1n, to 4.3.1 as soon as an untethered jailbreak is released, and I just wanted to run my steps through to make sure I'm doing it right.

I did select cydia to "Make my life easier", I backed up with pkgbackup, and I will back it up with iTunes, backup my 4.1 with tinyumbrella, and then upgrade to 4.3.1 with iTunes, then jailbreak.

Ive never upgraded a jailbroken device before, and ive seen multiple reports of bricking or losing 500mb of space.

Just making sure I won't have any worries unless I cockup majorly, thanks :)

Double check what blobs you have on cydia or tiny umbrella.
There's only a tethered jb for 4.3.1. Otherwise, I suggest 4.2.1 (if you have the blob for it).
Do you need to worry about an unlock? That'll require custom firmware.

ETA:it helps if you post iphone version, ios, bb and what you want to do with the phone. Also, your computing system helps too.

No one can answer your question until the jailbreak is released. It might be upgrade through itunes and then jailbreak. It might be a little more complex.

Suggest you check back when there is actually a reliable stable jailbreak.
