Hello! I am planning on upgrading my hard drive to a solid state and from there starting over with Mavericks (Instead of using the startup disk that came with the laptop--I currently have snow leopard, macbook pro early 2011. I need to upgrade so that I can use newer programs like the adobe suite). I can install the hard drive myself, but how would I go about starting over, with Mavericks? I know I can probably find it online even though it's not on the app store anymore since Yosemite came out, but once I do, should I download it to a CD or something like that?

If you happened to already redeem a code for it before, you can still redownload it in the purchases tab in the mac app store. Otherwise, the only place where apple are still offering mavericks is in the mac dev center for developers only.

Don't download an unauthorised copy from illegal sources. They will be too much of a security risk. You should only get apple system software directly from apple.

After you have legally obtained a copy of the Mavericks DMG, just use the free app DiskMaker X along with a 8GB USB key to make a full installer. Then option key boot to the USB and erase the whole disk with Disk Util and install.

If you don't have a previous purchase record or redeem code, the easiest way is to head toward an Apple Store, find a genius and ask him to help you install OS X 10.9 Mavericks.

It doesn't take a genius to get mavericks. You just click the button called Get Download Code in the mac dev center and it starts downloading from the mac app store automatically. Pretty simple really.
