I ordered the Series 5 GPS model from Best Buy on Thursday afternoon and it arrived just over 49 hours later.

I’ve shown great restraint so far. Opened the outer packaging but haven’t cracked the plastic seal on the box yet.

Any tips or pointers regarding what I need to do prior to switching everything over from the Series 1 to Series 5?

EDITED to note I bought the GPS version and also to correct that I’m upgrading from series 1, not series 2.

Nope, if you reset your S2 it automatically creates a backup that you can use with your S5. Backups are created as well when the Watch is charging - just activate your S5 and have fun :)

It kind of depends which version of WatchOS you we were running on your S2. wOS6 basically gives you the option to run all your apps in the background, all the time. Whilst this makes them zing it also means that your battery life takes a big hit. There was no end of threads where people were complaining about battery life when the new watch and version of wOS landed.

So, I would strongly recommend curating the apps you have on your Watch with background refresh enabled. Keep it just to the apps you will use on a regular basis, have as complications or in your dock etc.

Other than that, just backup to you iphone then restore to your new Watch if you want to keep the settings and faces etc. Or set it up fresh it you don’t.

And initial battery life will be a little poorer than ‘the norm’ for the first week or two irrespective of what you do as the Watch does various background housekeeping to get itself fully set up.

Is there a way to manually backup the old watch? I just want to make sure I have the most current backup before I activate the new watch.

Step 2: Remove plastic shrink wrap from box with pull tabs, then open box.

Step 3: Remove Apple Watch from box, and then remove the plastic surrounding wrapper around the Apple Watch.

Step 4: Place watch on wrist, tighten to your own preference. Power watch on.

Yeah, I finally got around to it last Saturday morning. And I love it. I shoulda done this sooner. Although waiting for it to drop to 329 was nice.

You can (and I do) pair both watches with your phone and continue to use your old one as well.

My S2 is used for sleep monitoring, working in the garage where I am more likely to damage it, etc. or when I forget to charge my S4.

Just set up the S5 as you did with your S1 and everything should come across. If your S1 still works well I'd consider keeping it as a backup for similar reasons to myself.
