Hi guys,

I was wondering if anyone has upgraded from a Samsung 470 to a Samsung 840 Pro? Or any other good SATA II to SATA III drive? If so, have you noticed applications launching with fewer bounces? Faster boot up times? One website claimed the 840 Pro completed certain real world tasks in half the time it took the 470.

For over two years, I've always felt it "behooved" me to have a SATA III drive in my Sandy Bridge 13". If you guys remember, the Sandy Bridge MacBooks were the first to come equipped with chipsets supporting 6 gb/s transfer rates.

Back in the Summer of 2011, I did go with a SATA III drive initially, the Crucial M4. And, if you recall, there were all sorts of issues with SATA III drives and MacBooks back then, they would hang and beach ball with little warning. I finally gave up and exchanged it for the venerable Samsung 470. About a week after doing so, Apple released a major firmware update all but vanquishing the SATA III demons. Additionally, a short time thereafter, the Samsung 830 was released.

While the Samsung 470 has been great and dependable, the M4 did seem noticeably quicker when it was behaving right. I did run Mountain Lion with the M4 then upgraded to Lion for the 470 (which could have something to do with it) but I'm still inclined to believe the SATA III is tangibly faster. Would you guys concur?
