upgrading ibook hard drive...maybe...

Hey guys, I'm looking to upgrade my ibook hard drive...any suggestions of speeds that I should look for or avoid? Can I upgrade it to a 5400rpm drive? Or should I stay at the 4200rpm speed? Any suggestions of what stores I should look at? I'm looking right now at microcenter or compusa...and some local store in the boston area...let me know what you guys think, thanks.

...just so sick of this small hard drive....

p.s. want to upgrade to 100gb...should of done it in the first place

Good idea. Are you planning on doing it yourself?

5400RPM (and 7200RPM) will be fine in an iBook. They'll only really provide benefits - faster disk access speed.

yeah, i've been to that site before, looks decent, i just don't have all those tools. The places i've been looking at will upgrade to a 100 gb hard drive ranging from 200 to 250 to do it all, considering i'd rather have the blame on them in case i screw up, i'm willing to spend the extra couple bucks. Also, to buy one costs about 180-200 depending on where i go...any suggestions on type (hitachi, samsung, etc.)?

I have read good things about Toshiba's "7K" line of 7200 rpm laptop hard drives; they are compatible with iBooks and benchmark very well according to Tom's Hardware and others. I'd get one myself if self-installation didn't void my iBook warranty (I'm not willing to pay someone else to do it, but I'm too paranoid that I'll leave some sign of the installation behind in case something goes wrong).

I am curious how well they work with iBook Batteries. I have read on some other sites that the fast spinning Toshiba drives really suck down the battery life on their laptops.

As far as the install, It is really easy just a bit time consuming to get it right. The best way to avoid making marks visible by Apple Techs, is to use a plastic tool to separate the case halves. Also make sure you use the correct size screwdriver when taking out the screws. if you use the wrong size, you may partially strip the head of the screw, making it quite obvious that someone has been inside.

I have completed multiple upgrades in G3 dual USB iBooks, and from the pictures the G4 looks quite similar inside.

do you know where i can get one of these online? Don't really trust e-bay (unless someone knows a really good seller)...any sites you guys know about that offer a good selection of internal hard drives at a good price? Let me know. Thanks.

don't really know what brand is in the ibook now and what would be the best one to put in...but i'd like to stay at 5400rpm's or less...only cause i hear A LOT that it can get really hot with anything higher....

Even if everything goes right you'll leave some sign of installation .
I'll check in to this but i'd say a certified service centre updates a SN database with installed components.
