Upgrading iPhoto Library Problem

I recently had to erase and re-install OS 10.3.7 and i want to use all of my iPhoto pictures and stuff. But when I open it, it says it needs to upgrade my iPhoto library, which it did when I first upgraded to iPhoto 4.0.3. But, it goes well until it reaches about 30 minutes remaining and then the program just hangs up. The little blue bar still moves but it doesn't move any further.

Please, if you can, help me with this problem. I still have all of the photos on an external hard drive (and my iMac G4 hard drive).

Please help me!
